Fascias and soffits Aesthetics

It is essential to get fascias and soffits correct for the roof to function properly and so it looks aesthetically pleasing. There are many elements within the roofline, so it is critical these function together as they are designed to so that the roof is protected from harsh weather, debris and animals. The look and kerb appeal of the roof are just as important as the function of the roof, which is why many styles, colours and materials of fascia and soffit are available to choose from.

What is a fascia?

The fascia is a horizontal board which is situated around the edge of the roof of a building. They close the gap between the roof and the walls by hanging over the walls of a building. They are functional and attractive, as they can be seen from the outside of a building.

What is fascia used for?

The fascia board is used to close gaps between the walls and the roof. They also prevent water and animal ingress from getting into the loft and roof space. Another factor is that they improve the appearance of the building by smoothing out the edges of the roof. This is a much more pleasing sigh than rough or open ended roof rafters. Guttering is attached to the fascias. They need to be well fitted and sturdy while also being aesthetically pleasing. With a simple and secure surface guttering can easily be installed and used to support the building with reduction when it rains heavily.

What materials are fascias made from?

Fascias are mainly made from three types of material; wood, UPVC and aluminium. UPVC and wood are usually used on domestic properties and aluminium is more likely to be used on a commercial or industrial building.

Wooden fascia

This is usually used as it is affordable and traditional. Wooden fascia will need to be primed before use and is not water resistant. This can cause it to rot over time if it is not protected. It will also need to be repainted as this will peel over time.

uPVC fascia

This is currently the most popular material used. This is because it is durable and will not rot or warp over time. This makes it much more likely to require no maintenance unlike wooden fascias. It also comes in a large variety of colours and styles to make sure you have the ideal parts without compromising your property’s look.

Aluminium fascia

This option is quite costly, but it does offer longer lasting benefits. This is why this product is popular with commercial and industrial buildings. From small stores to big superstores and industrial estates, lots of buildings that need increased resilience and a lower cost for maintenance will choose aluminium fascia due to its long lasting nature.
