Five things you NEED to know before choosing your fascias and soffits fitters

When you’re deciding whether to replace your soffits and fascias, it can be difficult knowing who to choose to complete the job.
It does not matter if you are choosing a local company or a larger specialist, there are some important things you need to ask before deciding on your roofer.
Have you worked on this type of house before? Can I see examples of your work?

Before you choose your roofer, it’s essential to research their quality of work. Looking at any pictures they have will allow you to do this and asses the quality of their work.

The detail is important and you’re looking for a ‘box end’ finish that includes a specialist section of plastic that is designed precisely for the specific job. It must not have any gaps and needs to be at a 90 degree angle. It should not be finished using off-cuts.

What fixings are you using?

Any experienced roofer will be aware that they should only use ring shank nails for the job. There are three sizes available, however, 65mm is usually the best size to use. 50mm can also be okay. Anything that is 40mm or lower should not be used.

What will you be fixing them to?

There are many correct answers to this question, but you should be asking it to find out the depth of their experience and knowledge. It is acceptable to attach a new fascia to the legs of a rafter if they are straight and have no issues. However, if they are damaged or crooked, plastic bracing or some form of timber noggin should be attached to provide a strong fixing for the fascia. This will straighten the fascia board providing a solid fixing point for the soffit as well.

Should I also replace the gutters?

If your gutters are ten years old, or older, it could make sense (financially) to replace them. This is because you will already be paying to remove and refit them. If anyone tells you otherwise they are most likely inexperienced.

If you do replace the gutters, you should not have to pay much more for this service to be carried out – only the cost of the new guttering itself.

Will a platform be used? If so, what type?

An experienced roofer is likely to use their own temporary working platforms to carry out the fitting, as this reduces costs. If a full scaffold is needed, this will increase the cost. You should always ask this question as it will give you a good idea of the price you will have to pay and allow you to compare quotes.
